What does this word "mass" have to do with Christ? Being raised as a Roman Catholic, I can let you know first-hand that the Mass is the Roman Catholic equivalent of the Protestant "church service." The primary function of the Mass, however, is called the "Liturgy of the Eucharist" where the priest "offers" a bread wafer and wine to God the Father as a repeat of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Without diving into the many theological problems this alone raises, the key issue comes down to what Catholic teaching says happens to the bread and wine on the altar during the Mass:
"It is also Catholic belief that in objective reality, not merely symbolically, the wheaten bread and grape wine are converted into Christ's body and blood, a conversion referred to as transubstantiation, so that the whole Christ, body and blood, soul and divinity, is truly, really, and substantially contained in the sacrament of the Eucharist." Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1374-1376This tragic, macabre, and idolatrous interpretation of the bread and wine mystically becoming the actual body and blood of Christ, to be re-sacrificed at the priest's hand, is one of the primary reasons the Reformation occurred.
This very name is an abomination to our Holy God. The reason for this is that this word Christmas is an unholy and pagan combination of the two words "Christ" and "Mass." Christ died once for our sins (Heb. 9:26). By that ONE offering He has perfected forever every believer (Heb. 10:14). Source link
The very name CHRISTmass is to a protestant, (this one anyway!) an abomination, a blasphemy, and a violation of the third commandment. I had no understanding of this, until I delved into the Catholic doctrines of transubstantiation. Source link
The term "Christmas" is blasphemous. Its etymology (word history) is from "Christ-mass", "mass" being the Catholic church's Communion (the Eucharist) where they claim the bread and juice turn into the actual body and blood of Jesus (called "transubstantiation"). Christ is sacrificed at each mass. This goes directly against Hebrews 9:27-28; 10:11-18. Source link
"Christ's Mass"...is a Roman Catholic teaching on the Lord's Supper. It's practice is represented by a priest, who offers Christ up for a sacrifice for the sins of the world each time the mass is performed. With a supernatural ability that is supposedly given to the Priest, he is then able to transform the bread and wine into the literal body and blood of Christ. Instructions of worshiping the wafer are given to their members in Catholicism. However, when it comes to plain and true biblical teaching, this is obviously contrary to what the Scriptures say in terms of the true meaning of the Lord's supper and Christ's sacrifice for the sins of His people (read; Heb. 9:12, 24-26; 10:10,12,14). In the Roman Catholic Church they celebrate what is called "the mass", where they partake of wine and a wafer called the Eucharist, just as some Christians partake of wine and unleavened bread during "The Lord's Supper". Most Christians believe that the bread and the wine are symbolic of the body and blood of Jesus, but the Roman Catholic Church believes that the Eucharist actually becomes the body of Jesus when it is consecrated by the priest, and that the wine becomes the actual blood of Jesus when it is consecrated. This is the doctrine of TRANSUBSTANTIATION, and according to the pronouncement of the Council of Trent, transubstantiation is defined as, "the changing of the whole substance of the bread into the body, and the whole substance of the wine into the blood of Jesus Christ, the appearance of bread and wine alone remaining." (ENCYCLOPAEDIA AMERICANA Volume 27, p27). Source link
As such; Christmas (the mass of Christ) is a catholic holiday. Take the word of Christmas and break it down: Christ + Mass. The word ‘Christmas’ itself is an attempt to join the Holy Name of Christ with ‘mass,’ a false doctrine of the Catholic Church! The mass is a Catholic prayer that's read or sung for the soul of a dead person. If "Christmas" is supposed to be about the birth of Jesus, then why does the word Christmas itself refer to His death? It is the Catholic teaching that the "Mass" is not a mere representation of the sacrifice of Christ, but that it is a continuation of the same offering, as the priest commands our Lord Jesus to come down from glory and become a piece of bread. The Roman priest teaches that this same 'mass' adds to and improves upon the atonement of our Savior which He made on Calvary. "Mas" is just the shortening of the blasphemous "mass" of Rome. Christ died once for our sins.... Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Source link
